Justice project.

justice speeches

speech 1:
freedom

what is the relationship between justice, compassion and freedom? i'm sure you all have your own ideas and views on the matter, however please allow me to push my own before you revisit yours.

Justice and freedom have an integral impact on each other; one cannot exist independent of the other. Justice is required to protect individual freedoms, and the knowledge that an individual who has wronged you will be brought to justice brings a peace of mind you cannot feel otherwise. In order for a human to truly feel free there must be some semblance of law in their society.

Just as zinn states we put in law to remove the rule of man, justice as rule of man states is only made to control and oppress another, freedom can only thrive when the rule of law exists. Law is justice. However just as zinn states “it is deception to say the rule of law has replaced the rule of man”

while the rule of law is less in place to oppress then the rule of man.  the law is still wielded unjustly by thouse in power however just as it can be weilded to oppress it can also be weilded to protect justice is usually found in the law we are not so arcane that we impose our own justice on others.

true Justice is law and justice protects freedom they don’t exist independently. To much freedom can become problematic, while it is your body you should not be able to do whatever you want all the time when your choices affect others in a negative way you shouldn’t be allowed to make your own choices. If you have a child at home you can’t do drugs and party while leave the child to fend for itself humans are not always the best at making decisions when your freedoms begin to limit others that’s when law must come in to prevent further detriment we are incapable of making our own decisions sometimes and as such need to be mothered by law.

Justice is law and law is freedom. this being said law is not always heavy handed when law is properly put into place devoid of human baise it is in fact ruled by compassion “there is no conflict between compassion and justice” this was said by dalai lama. he states that the disconnect between them, should not exist it takes compassion to write just and fair laws that promote individual freedoms and prosperity. however  has never been achieved properly.

As such I ask again what is the relationship between justice, compassion and freedom to you? and i implore you to search for how you can change the laws.

speech 2:
balance

the sacred lands of this beautiful area must be preserved however, this doesn’t mean we should give up on the natural resources. we need to work towards a middle ground that can satisfy both parties represented, the large corporations just trying to support the infrastructure already in place, keeping our country running through supplying the energy required to keep it running. the people unwanting of the destruction this  causes to their environment, the pollution of the air and water wital to there life. we however cannot just move away from how we have lived since the beginning of our country. as james buchan said “A century ago, petroleum - what we call oil - was just an obscure commodity; today it is almost as vital to human existence as water.”

i do not support the senseless destruction of our sacred land. we need to work towards a middle ground we cannot just snap our fingers and everything will just transfer to clean and sustainable energy we need to figure out how to transfer cleanly and over time it has taken time to get to this point and its going to take even more still to get in place the proper infrastructure and train for new jobs according to the The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Natural Resources “more than 11,000 citizens of this state are directly employed by the oil and gas industry.” it will take time to move them to new jobs. the us only uses renewable energy for approximately 12% of our total energy use out of 47 quintillion watts that means renewable energy is only responsible for 57 trillion watts there would be no way to support the US off that amount of energy.

before we reach that place we must find a balance we cannot just stop producing oil, coal and, natural gas however we can change the way we produce and harvest it we cannot continue the destruction of our ancestral lands but the goal should be until we can truly transfer to clean energy, to cleanly and healthy harvest natural resources. there are ways to minimize the impact of wells to marginal levels we just need to move back to a place where this is true reinstating some legislation we have discarded giving locals a say in where wells are located and when they are in operation. “New Mexico has been a major producer of oil and natural gas since hydrocarbons were first discovered in the state during the early 1920's. In 2016, New Mexico produced 145 million barrels of oil, 1.27 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and 97 billion cubic feet of naturally occurring carbon dioxide.” the locals in the greater chaco area once had a say in how the wells in this area operated they created the san juan citizens alliance “In 1986 a group of concerned citizens joined forces, launching the Alliance to protect their families and neighbors from the impacts of unchecked oil and gas development” this alliance gained a seat in the dealings of blm. however they where quickly crushed by blm and local companies before they could really change anything. We need to move back into a place of transition where locals have a say in how things are governed with the goal of moving to sustainably sourced clean energy. it will be to late if we wait much longer we have to create legislation to regulate companies make more groups like the saun juan citizens alliance and keep them alive regulation and transference is the key to our prosperity.

Project:
The balance of cause

The results

Defence

What did you end up doing for your project?

For my project, I chose to make a t-shirt however after completing the design I learned that I could not print less than 148 shirts. I shifted gears and chose to print a poster instead. I will be hanging up the posters around town.

How did your project reflect your philosophy of justice?

My poster is trying to bring attention to the injustice of the way we dispose of trash into the oceans. I redesigned my project many times over the three weeks. This was partly because I was unsure how to illustrate this issue. I eventually decided to draw a hand dripping toxic waste into a vase filled with the ocean. There was a lot of symbolism in this project, I drew a vase because ultimately the ocean is limited in its bounty. I then drew soil and plants at the bottom of the vase to represent the life that is oh so fragile on our reefs, we never even think about it. I drew a sea turtle to bring the piece into a more widely known fight. The fight to save turtles by using paper or metal straws. I then sought to bring this back on us as the humans who do not care, we only seek to preserve our comforts at the cost of anything. I finished by drawing the dripping toxic waste. The vase fills slowly, suffocating everything illustrating how easily we can tip the balance out of our favor.

I was illustrating the injustice we all carelessly participate in every day of our lives. The beginning of this project was dedicated to learning different philosophies of justice. I learned that injustices aren’t exclusive to human effects on each other. There are also so many environmental injustices out there in the world. My original justice monologue was on finding that balance in the terms of oil and gas in the greater Chaco area. Just as I tried to say in that monologue, I was also illustrating the idea that we can't just switch gears and immediately go from the place we are now to green. We have to find a balance between destruction and regrowth. We can't just stop producing and using plastics but we can take better care with them, my philosophy is not so concrete but I don't believe we should just stop but rather come to a place of balance through conservation and protection.

Reflection:

In what way were you successful in meeting the goals you established in your proposal? What contributed to your failures? What did you do to try to overcome the obstacles? What should you have done differently?

I did a good job of meeting my goals and being on task over the course of this project. I would sometimes be off task and talking to someone or wandering aimlessly but I would always come back and work hard to make a good final project. I made the rough draft, line work and final copy when I wanted them done. I made the shirt on the day I wanted to. I finished my original piece on time allowing me to spend the time I had wanted to spend marketing instead designing a new project. I should have originally checked the shirt design which would have allowed me more time to make my final project, but I believe I was able to overcome the time crunch and come up with a good final project.

How much did you “showup”

This a topic I've cared about since I was 12 I've dedicated so much of my time to this topic and I wanted to give others that passion too. I've spent so much time reading nat geo articles and looking into the things we are doing about these issues. Did you know that since 2016 there have only been 6 trash clean-up projects with only one in use? Or did you know that 24 trillion pounds of trash are deposited into the ocean every year? I bet you didn't know everyone “knows” of this issue but no one really knows. I have spent much of my life researching this issue and I wanted to spread some of that knowledge. So after further research I took it a step further and made an art piece meant to stir something in you. I definitely showed up while doing this project. I drew not one but 8 different drawings. I designed two shirts and three stickers, a QR code and a poster before I was satisfied with the result. While doing this project I was never ideal during work time and I believe that it really shows.

What will you take away from this:

I realize looking back that I could have been better organized and been more on top of my goals. I could have maybe never even attempted to make the shirt making it so i did not have to make the original three pieces of art I made. I really want to take this mindset with me into next semester and senior projects starting every step knowing the end result is attainable. Ensuring that and staying knowledgeable about my topics will be vital to a beautiful end result.
