Personal philosophy project.

Project Description

For this project, we very minimally studied a few common philosophies. We did this in the hope it would bring a further understanding of our own philosophies. throughout this project we kept a philosophy in which we responded to the philosophies presented to us and reacted to each other's ideas and ideas presented to us through the texts. We were also able to illustrate our understanding of the philosophies. The main project was very broad and only asked us to examine and illustrate one of our philosophies in this way everyone was different and allowed the class as a whole to truly understand one or more philosophies.

New Insights

Through this project itself I didn't really gain any insights into my own philosophies. However it allowed me to recognize where some of my main influences had come from. It really helped me solidify my ideals through the rejection of other philosophies and/or ideas. In this branch I was able to see that I am less accepting of ideals contrary to my own,  this alone may have been a semi incite unto my own hypocrisy for this itself goes against some of my philosophies.

Intellectual Work Left to Do:

I am probably going to have to dig into my own values again and reconsider the values that are leading to my own hypocrisy.  I have recognized that I am not a good example of the value i hope to push on others. there is going to have to be a self journey that hopefully ends with me being a good example.

Rhetorical Discourse Project reflection

  • Describe the project that you did and the way you shared it with an audience.

For this project, we were to make a project, paper, video, etc, that addressed a relevant issue that had two sides. For this project I really struggled to decide what I wanted to do for my project first I thought I’ll just do a paper it’ll be easiest. However, this idea slowly got harder to swallow I had way too many papers and had no idea how I was going to get it done so I decided to make a book instead. This book is a commentary on the diversion of people and how it affects us Hermione’s family is supposed to represent people willing to change and adapt and accept others and new ideas. Dorothy's family represents our current climate, “it doesn’t matter if you think different you such I’ll never change” I read many sources from THe sun u.s to BLM’s website I pulled out their ideologies and tried to tie both into this book. My original focus was just BLM vs. blue lives matter but, decided it went deeper than specific values on certain issues, this was my conclusion. so I decided I wanted to make a commentary on the values of our current system and the issues it causes. Low and behold this actually turned out to be The most difficult project I did but in the end I enjoyed it, it truly was my favorite project I shared it with my family and a few friends whom all thought it to be pretty good and it filled me with pride to hear their responses. And I’m positive Jessica will also enjoy reading it.

    • What do you understand about the ideology of others that you didn’t before?

I learned that my ideology isn’t exclusively held, more people in my class in the country and the wider world hold it. I honestly had started feeling alone in my views being where we are Bayfield is super red Durango is about as blue as you can get. In this polarized climate I felt alone. However after starting this project, talking to my classmates and reading articles from all sides of the spectrum. More people than I knew shared my perspective and it's given me a hope I had lost.

  • What have you learned about rhetoric, ideology, and the “democratic experiment”?

I had no idea just how prevalent rhetoric was in our society.  Rhetoric means “the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.” you never look at a sign and think “oh ya that’s some good rhetoric” but after this semester its something I find myself thinking about, our entire society is based on rhetoric who you vote for, where you eat out all these things are usually influenced by some form of rhetoric you consume. Political ads will usually play off your ideology to make you think “they have me in mind I want them in office.”.

One's ideology is the accumulation of their life experience and morals. Your ideological lens changes what rhetoric is effective, if you have a more right-wing ideology you probably won’t appreciate a sign that says give more to the poor less to the rich and you will push against whatever agenda it's trying to present. However, if you have a more left-wing ideology, you will look at the same sign with a completely different view and you would want to support whatever it is pushing. This metaphor right here is “the democratic experiment” in and of itself.

  • What role could Rogerian rhetoric and/or a “willingness to be disturbed” play in a democratic society?

Rogerian rhetoric and a willingness to be disturbed are the most important part of a democratic society. Rogerian rhetoric is a piece of rhetorical discourse that seeks to find a midground instead of pushing a polarized agenda. A willingness to be disturbed is the willingness to consume rhetoric that may be against your own ideologies. The main part of America has lost both of these tools our country used to see both sides of an argument and search for a solution together this meant that sometimes you would have to do or see something that may not have been ideal for you. However our current society can’t do that and the effects are being felt across the world, the first debate was bashed worldwide because they refused to even discuss anything. We need to make it back to a point both of these are once again prevalent.

MUN second conference

for this project our task was to learn our country's views on nuclear proliferation and hold a conference to solve the problem to our liking.

final draft policy paper

MUN Reflection.

Overall I enjoyed the mun processes, completely from the research to the conference not only did this allow me to learn more about my ancestral home but it showed me just how hard it is to come to international consensus, from trying to compromise to international grudges. This project allowed me to see just how important and complicated a role that The UN plays keeping global peace and allowing the world to continue running smoothly. It was very apparent to me that while in appearance (and practice sometimes) it seems more than a little inefficient it is actually the best and fastest way of dealing with international issues. Not Only this but representing North Korea in the conferences showed me just how complex international issues can be, like in our second conference when even though I was in complete agreement with the USA’s resolution we could still not merge ours with theirs.

With this conference you could tell i had a greater understanding of how to better represent my country, in the last conference i was loud and obnoxious but in this conference i was less obnoxious and more willing to negotiate. Through my research I learned that my country was only loud when they were in direct disagreement with something that was said or proposed. Going to this conference I also better learned how to give a good speech for my POL and last conference gave me a better understanding of what a good speech is and how to pull people to my side. Leading me to give a good 1 minute speech that was convincing and sincere. Other than that I really don’t think I improved in any major ways. (but i'm betting that this reflection is way better than my last one right lori? ;))

I improved my ability to speak in front of others through my main speech and i believe that i gained more quick thinking and improvisational skills through the second and third round  speeches. I personally think that these are the skills that help you through your entire lives. Without the proper skills in speaking and the comfort that comes through being good at it you cannot excel in life, having these skills and being good at them will allow me to do well in interviews and will help me give good presentations later on in school.

I really don’t think i would change anything nor do I believe that anyone else in our pod would change what they did over all the conference flowed well and everyone did everything on time.

The world should be allowed to retain and further any nuclear technologies without fear of repercussions. If Nuclear Weapon states began dismantling and removing nuclear weapons in their countries North Korea would be open to non-proliferation negotiations as well.

Treaties like the NPT and CTBT have oppressed the world, preventing nuclear proliferation and advancement of all nuclear related technologies. When the NPT was notarized and signed in 1968, it was supposed to prevent the manufacturing, production and spread of nuclear weapons. (Office of the Historian)  However, it has spread and now limits the advancement of nuclear energy as well. The NPT says that you cannot have uranium refined above a certain limit, limiting the advancement and spread of nuclear energy as well. We as North Korea have seen the risk of following these treaties; not only do these prevent smaller countries from gaining nuclear technologies but they allow countries already in possession of nuclear weapons and technologies to keep them, setting them up for the domination of global political fields and preventing others from being able to stop them. This allows them to wield an iron gauntlet and blatantly violate the rights of other countries. Nuclear weapon states have also taken into a large amount of nuclear warheads that have been “confiscated” from other countries like Pakistan      (“nuclear annexation and giving up warheads”). The USA has a history of this, when we left the NPT in 2009 the USA strong-armed countries and private companies into compliance with sanctions they imposed (ACA timeline of North Korean WMDs). If North Korea did not have the fear that nuclear weapons provide us, this country would have fallen into anarchy and disarray. Not only this, but we have been repeatedly threatened with invasion. We believe that the only way to assure that we are respected as a foreign nation is to continue to develop nuclear weapons.

We should limit the amount of nuclear weapons a country is allowed to have. In order to accomplish this we could hold another Geneva Convention to limit the amount of nuclear weapons and prevent world powers from seizing nuclear weapons, like when Russia took nuclear weapons from Ukraine, and two other nuclear states (“Giving up nuclear weapons it’s rare but it happens”) not only this but we should put safeguards in place to hold bigger countries accountable for their actions. Instead of allowing countries to take possession of confiscated nuclear warheads we should send them to nuclear free zones to be dismantled to the furthest possible point and stored not only this but we should also change the terms of the NPT to allow for private manufacturing of weapons, and change the level you are allowed to refine uranium and plutonium too. If nuclear weapon states began dismantling and removing nukes for their countries we would be open to non proliferation as well.

MUN Reflection.

I really enjoyed this project over all. Because not only could I learn more about the way the current political world but I also learned a bit more about the history of Korea. Learning about Venezuela's refugee crisis was also very enjoyable for me (Not to mention i was supposed to be loud and obnoxious in MUN) I was allowed to learn more about what is currently happening in south america and the current political standings of major countries but also the problems that it has caused for other countries. Being able to have a super biased view on the MUN conference as a whole was enjoyable.

I think through this project it allowed me to work on my speech skills and quick thinking skills. Generally speaking i struggle with public speaking and I believe that through this project I have improved a little and will continue to improve I improved my ability to speak in front of others through my main speech and i believe that i gained more quick thinking and improvisational skills through the amendment speech.

I think that over all i was pretty prepared for our first MUN conference, the practice conferences and practice prepared us pretty well for our first real one. Not only this but, the country research part one and two also allowed us to not only gain an understanding of our country's political views and allies but it also gave us a pretty thorough understanding of the Venezuelan crisis. through this we gained a better ability to defend our own views and also allowed us to gain a better understanding of who our political allies and enemy's where.

What do you plan to do differently in our second MUN conference in January?  Why do you think this will improve your experience and the conference as a whole? Generally speaking, I don't think I would change anything. As long as I continue to follow the instruction miss. Lori has given me i should do fine. However i got a little repetitive with my comments in our last conference so maybe i would change that.
